4 Tips For A Vaca Body Check

Hey y'all! It's summer!!! I don't know about y'all, but I am SO excited about it! This will be the first in a few years that I am not a wedding planner- having to work every weekend, AND last summer was crazy working and planning my own wedding! So this year? This year, I will be enjoying every bit of it I can soak up.

I was thinking about how as hard as it can be to get in shape before a vacation, it's even harder to stay in shape while on vacation. And that reason, at least for me, is because I believe a vacation is what it is- a true v a c a t i o n. You shouldn't have to worry about what you eat or do on your trip. Wherever you go, you want to enjoy it full on; you want to enjoy the food, the drinks, the lifestyle of being lazy (or adventurous) but not having to worry about what you normally do at home.

I have vacationed many times with my family to the Mediterranean, and those trips are great for my so called "diet." Not only do we walk all over historical sites, but the food there is so much healthier. So I never feel like I've gained too much weight while on those trips. Where my main problem lies, is when I go on a vacation to the beach. Because when I am wearing a bathing suit every day, it's hard for me not to get a little bit of a tummy, mainly because I'm stuffing my mouth with anything but wholesome foods. Carbs are my hardest thing to fight when it comes to keeping my belly pretty flat, but they are also my hardest thing to resist. Bread. Love it.

So that got me thinking about ways to stay in shape while on vacation WITHOUT ruining the fun. Because honestly, some of us are not the kind of people that will get up at 7am every morning to work out, or resist all the good food and desserts on a vacation. If you are one of those people, hey, good for you! But not all of us are. So this is dedicated to those of us that want to truly vacation but might need a little bit of help keeping our bodies in check.

Note: This is based on a beach vacation, because that is what I'll be doing end of June. (And because it's one of the more lazy types of vacation. Ya know, not like a trip to hike the Great Wall of China.) But it can obviously be applied towards whatever type of trip you take.

Number 1: Portion control.
You definitely want to eat the breaded shrimp or cheesy biscuits at the seafood restaurant, plus the desserts or the Mojito's on the beach. But if you control your portions, it will be easier to not feel overloaded and bulk up. I mean yes, you are indulging, but you don't want to miss out on the fun. Just control yourself. Don't eat the whole basket. In fact, take some home in a doggy bag, and then you can have it for lunch tomorrow. (Saving you money!)

Number 2: Disguised work outs.
Now, doing a hundred sit ups on your condo floor every day is probably not going to happen. If you're a runner, take a run on the beach. But if you're not a runner, like me, then find other ways to exercise your body while still enjoying the scenery. When you head out into the water, take the first few minutes to swim around, kicking your legs and using your arms to give your body a good boost of cardio. (Then you have my permission to sit back in your floaty with a cold one and enjoy those waves.) When you're standing in the kitchen waiting on the popcorn, do some jumping jacks or lunges while you countdown to that buttery delishesness. Little bits of random exercise throughout the day will be better than nothing!

Number 3: Activities.
Break a sweat playing games on the beach or wherever you are, like beach volleyball, football, frisbee or whatever else you and your companions like to do! Even going out dancing after dinner one night would be a perfect way to burn some calories. I know I'll most likely be playing chase with my nieces and nephews come my beach week.

Number 4:
Take the steps, walk or bike to your destination whenever possible! Hopefully, if the weather is good, you'll want to spend most of your time outside anyway! So if the restaurant is near by, skip the car and enjoy the scenery with a walk. If your condo or house have stairs, skip the elevator. Rent some bikes and take an afternoon to bike to the towns near by or through a national forest.

Number 5, just for good measure..:
Drink plenty of water! Make it something you are consistently doing through out your trip! Take a bottle with you to the beach or pool, order a water with every drink or meal and tell yourself to always finish it before you leave.

I hope these are helpful to y'all. I am going to work hard to keep them myself here in about three weeks when I'm heading to the beach with my family, and on any other adventures I take this summer.

If any of you have good tips for keeping up with your important health and fitness without feeling like you're not embracing a true vacation, I'd love to hear them so let me know!

Oh and don't forget to use sunscreen! Protect your skin!
xo,
t.

P.S.
Let me finish by saying I am NO expert in health and fitness. I am one of the worst people for that. I can say some great things to people I'm chatting with about it, but do I consistanly follow my own rules? Hardly! But at least I try, right? I also want to point out that the above paragraphs are not saying every girl has to have a perfectly flat stomach. The reason I am writing this is for those of you that want to keep one. 😘

Half A Dozen :::|:::

Hello Monday, and hello to whoever is reading! I am about to share the first fun part about my March '15. If you missed my last post, an introduction to my March series of posts, click here to read. Otherwise, keep reading! :) Oh, and if you are solely interested in my top 6 registry items, skip half way down.

Today, my hot hubs and I are celebrating a little something. It's little compared to what we will hopefully celebrate together for years to come. But it is a big celebration because it puts a good mark on our first year of marriage.
Happy 6 Months to my awesome husband!

Neither of us are into the whole "happy 6 weeks!" "Happy 2 months!" "Happy 14 months!" Ick.
I mean that's not that bad if you're one of those people. We just are not. And I will not change when babies come along. If I start posting every other week about how old my kid is, or worse, during pregnancy I post the size of the kid inside me compared to some fruit, my husband has permission to band me from social media.

Sorry, that got a little dark. Anyway...

We got married on August 30th last summer. But 6 months later, we're celebrating our little half year mark on March 2nd, because, well ya know, February rides the short bus. Uh well.

So now I want to share some inspiration with you that derived from thinking about the last 6 months.
First off, we made it longer than a lot of marriages. Probably Vegas marriages mostly. Or Kim Kardashian. What? Are we all over that joke?

Also, we have now been together in person, and lived in the same city, for days exceeding the amount of days we were together in person while dating. 161 (roughly) to 190 (roughly.. including wedding + honeymoon.) We dated long distance, if you didn't know.

We really have been blessed with a beautiful first 6 months of marriage. I'll try not to get too sappy on here for everyone's sake, but I do mean it. It's different for every marriage I'm sure. And though we both know that our lives together won't always be this perfect, due to just life and how it goes, we are very grateful to have had such a good start. Especially since I moved away from my hometown and family, it's been as good of a transition as it could have ever been! I have one amazing guy.

Oh! Another thing. I have managed to FEED us every week! Points for wife!

Ok now I will move on to something a little more fun. I am going to list 6 items we were gifted, and LOVE. Items you should definitely register for if you're engaged. (Or use wedding money on afterwards.) :)

#1. Ninja blender.
My parents had gotten one in the year prior to me moving, so I had already fallen in love with it, and wanted to make sure it was on our registry! Though we haven't used it to it's full potential yet, it is an awesome and super powerful blender! I make smoothies pretty often, and my favorite part is I can make just one. I don't have to make a huge batch, but just use the individual cups to make one at a time. Also, I use the same to 'chop' up onion. It turns it to paste practically! So if you need onion in a recipe to add texture, then don't use the Ninja. But if you want flavor and no hassle in cutting it up, the Ninja is perfect!

#2. Toaster. (lol)
Ok, so that's a given I guess. But here's the thing.. my parents got rid of our toaster years ago and we used the oven. Seemed fine to me. But now that I have one again? Love it. Forgot how great they are. Also, we have a rad toaster! It's from West Elm where we had one of three registries. (Great place to find fun and unique stuff to register for!) See pic below:

#3. Towels.
Ok so we put on our list these gloriously fluffy super soft towels. Once they arrived in a gift, we laughed a bit at ourselves. We thought: we don't really needs these do we? Not now anyway. We could return and get stuff we do need...
But then we realized. When would we ever buy that good of towels on our own?? Sure, if we get rich one day. Haha. But right now, we are buying cheap food. We sure as heck aren't going to spend our little bit of money on expensive incredibly plush towels. So let's keep them! And save them. Save them until we have the perfect home to use them in. So that's what we are doing. It's not a bad idea to register for some thing you won't need or use right away. Good sheets, of course nice china is a given and some nice serving dishes are all things you might love pulling out of a box in a couple years, or finally get to use once you move into your dream home!

#4 + #5 Anything to drink from, for or with. If you both love coffee, register for something fun like a Keurig 2.0, espresso maker, or a french press! (The hubs and I have 2 of those 3.) We enjoy coffee, and each other, so we have fun putting the two together! But if not coffee, you could get a fancy kettle, a large assortment of special hot cocoa mixes, a sleek decanter, funky pitchers, or for any of that- stylish glassware to drink from! Whatever it is y'all love to drink, find a way to make it fun and special each time you make it.
Glassware!
We were able to register and were gifted some really awesome drink/glassware, and maybe it's just me, but I love it all! I have already had an obsession with coffee mugs; another thing we own a lot of. But Having fun glassware makes anything from just setting the table for dinner to having a glass of wine while watching Suits even more enjoyable! So find some unique things like that that fit your couple's personality and style of kitchen! We were gifted great glassware from West Elm, wine glasses with our names and personal wedding logo etched on the front, and even awesome copper 'Moscow Mule' mugs! See pics below:

#6. Invest in each other.
Before you get to your wedding date, take time to 'register' some things for the both you to do together after the party is over. While registering, you've made sure to cross off your must haves for the kitchen, bed and bath and even some decor for the living room. But make sure you think about what you will do for your fiance day to day that will encourage him/her after a long day of work, a fun weekend, or how to make your home well suited for you both.
(Also, I suggest starting an activity to do together, like starting a TV series. If you both need to unwind at the end of the day, it is fun to have a show you both like, rather than scanning the channels for something you both will want to watch. Besides TV, my hubs and I are about to start learning a language! I'll try to keep you updated on that possibly comical adventure. ;))

I am in NO way a marriage expert. But I am starting to learn a lot about how to live life with someone. Your one and only someone. It's a wonderful journey to be on, and I can't wait to see the next 6 months (and the 80 years after that) play out!

Oh I forgot dish towels. You can never have too many dish towels!

Thanks for reading-

Oh, no, honey I'm good. Really.

(First off: I'm just going to skip the long drawn out paragraph describing why I haven't written in weeks and just move on....cool? Cool.)

Anyone else out there a fan of Andy Grammer's music? How can you not be? He is a funny guy, (saw him in concert and he made funny jokes and danced in the crowd, singing, WHILE his arm was around me...) and his music is upbeat, clean and just good happy music. Anyway, he has a song called "Honey I'm Good" about saying no to other women because he's got a hot date at home. Or something like that. While listening to the song this morning, I couldn't help but switch up the words a bit to make it more relatable to me... "Oh no honey I'm good, I could have another (Milky Way) but I probably should not. I've had enough for the season and if I have another I'll probably get....fat." (And this is why I didn't pursue writing music for a living.)

I don't know about the rest of you, but the treats we received over the holiday season are still lingering around our place. My husband and I received cookies, sweet treats and candy and even have some soda lying around, and it is not good. I mean it WAS good. What's Christmas without the sweets?! But though we have finished some and thrown out others, there are still milky ways that find their way into my mouth at least once a night. Chocolate, Dr Pepper and peppermint chocolate Hershey kisses are my absolute weakness. But today I finally woke up with the desire to stop eating the junk and get back into a healthy eating and workout routine.

Last year before my wedding, I ate well and was staying active with work but worked out in between. But from the honeymoon on, the hubs and I have spent our time more enjoying the guilty pleasures of life including eating chocolate and lounging on the couch watching The Office and Game of Thrones. But like everyone else in America, in January, we desire to get back into shape.

So today, I got on the elliptical and only 20mins in, I thought I was going to die. I absolutely hate that feeling of trying to work out after I haven't in a while. It's like my body is saying "what the crap are you doing to me?!" But all I have to do is look at my middle section, daydream of our beach trip this coming summer, think about my cute bikinis and I push on. Sweat drenched, muscles aching, and Bruno Mars cheering me on, it is TIME to feel good about my health again! (Wow, this could not be a more cliché January blog post, could it?! Eh, whatever.)

So today, my inspiration piece to share is this:

I found these on Pinterest and just loved both! (Pinned on my Savor & Swoon board) One is good for me in the sense I am one of those people that has cravings for a little chocolate (or a lot) or love the taste of a refreshing (terribly bad for you) drink. So this will be a good reminder when I have those moments.

The second one is great because how many times do we wake up ready to do something, yet we go to bed kicking ourselves because we "never got around to it?" If I think about how I'll feel crawling into bed at night feeling defeated, it'll push me to want to do more in the day. I think it can also apply to other areas, not just working out. Work, responsibilities, even house chores, and goals in life, are all something we want to feel like we're making progress with. Even if it is little by little, if we go to bed each night feeling satisfied with what we did get done that day, it will get better and better every single day.

Here's to healthy living, physical and emotional!
